I did some more digging, it looks like this issue is with BuddyPress core. It isn’t caused by any plugins. It appears the BuddyPress core provides the @tagging functionality and not Boss theme or Wall. The issue is as I described above, it searches all xprofile fields and not just username. But it only uses the first 5 results and filters those by username.
