I use WanGuard to mark spammer accounts and ban them, it doesn’t stop them from signing up, but it will lock them out and allows other members to mark spammers for you. It does require you to manage the users, as any automatic system probably won’t work 100% perfect, but it has been a good solution for my site, so I thought I would share.
